FIA approves new points system

NEWS STORY
11/12/2009

The World Motor Sport Council, which met in Monaco today, has accepted the F1 Commission's proposal for a new points system.

The WMSC, sitting under its newly elected president, Jean Todt, for the first time, subsequently issued a brief statement confirming that due to the expanded grid of 13 teams the new points system will be in place for next season.

It is widely thought that the F1 Commission's suggestion was principally in deference to its president, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who had previously been pushing for a championship based on medals.

The new system will see points awarded as follows:

1st: 25
2nd: 20
3rd: 15
4th: 10
5th: 8
6th: 6
7th: 5
8th: 3
9th: 2
10th: 1
