Change to test rules for newcomers?

NEWS STORY
09/09/2009

Following the problems encountered this season, when new and veteran drivers were called into F1 action but banned from testing the actual cars they would race, a change to the rules has been proposed for 2010.

The ban on in-season testing meant that Jaime Alguersuari (right) and Romain Grosjean made their F1 race debuts with virtually no running in the 2009 cars, indeed, the Spanish driver's only experience of F1 was a few straightline tests.

Then there were the problems facing Michael Schumacher, Luca Badoer and Tonio Liuzzi, all making their return to the F1 cockpit after minimal running, certainly in the cars they were expected to race.

However, now, according to a report in Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, if a team wishes to change its driver line-up during 2010, a one-day test will be allowed in order to bring the incoming driver up to speed.

However, it is understood that in an attempt to prevent abuse of the system, should a driver test a car but subsequently not take the race drive - such as was the case with Schumacher - the test day would be deleted from the team's allocation for the following year.
