Teams insist breakaway is still possible

Speaking at the Nurburgring, representatives of several members of the teams' alliance made it clear that a breakaway series is still a possibility.

"I don't think we've ever taken it away," said John Howett, boss of the Toyota F1 team and FOTA vice-chairman. "We've just put it on the backburner."

"We still don't have an agreement although I would say we are making progress, slowly but steadily," added BMW's Mario Theissen. "But we cannot sit back and wait. We have to keep all options open, and that means we have to look at the other course as well."

However, Red Bull's Christian Horner appeared a little more optimistic. "The teams are very close to finding an agreement with the commercial rights holder regarding a new Concorde Agreement," he said.

"Obviously, there is a bit of turbulence at the moment with the FIA," he added, a masterpiece of understatement, "but I'm hoping common sense will prevail and that we can find a solution very shortly."
