Hamilton dismisses customer engine threat

NEWS STORY

Maybe it's a case of knowing Max Mosley's reputation, or maybe he is simply aware of how many people Cosworth employs ("approximately 40 people") and what exactly the company has been doing - in terms of high performance racing engines - since it left F1, but Lewis Hamilton remains confident that the FIA's proposal for a customer engine won't happen.

"I can't see it happening," he told reporters in London yesterday, as he carried out an anti drink-drive promotional programme, "The manufacturers play such a huge role in the sport and are what make it so exciting. If you didn't have them, Formula One will be like one of the lower categories and it will not be as exciting."

Following FOTA's meeting earlier this week and its subsequent discussion with the FIA, the World Motor Sport Council meets in Monaco today to agree the steps which could decide Formula One's fate.

While Bernie Ecclestone's 'suggestion' of a medals based championship will be on the agenda, the main focus, in light of Honda's withdrawal, is how the sport dramatically cuts costs, presents a more environmental image, and attracts new fans in addition to retaining it current fan-base.
