McLaren and Honda have confirmed that they are to test at Portugal's Autodromo Internacional Algarve this winter, as the new track seeks to become one of the major F1 test venues along with Jerez and Barcelona in Spain.

The 4.69 km track, which only gained FIA approval earlier this month, having already gained FIM approval for Superbikes, has, like Paul Ricard, numerous track configurations allowing teams to replicate various other circuits. There is also a hi-tech sprinkler system which allows wet weather testing.

In addition to the race track - which it is hoped might one day see Portugal return to the F1 calendar - the owners have plans for various other facilities including a technology park and hotel.

The inaugural test is planned for December 15-17.
