With just four more race weekends before he hangs up his helmet - no pun intended - David Coulthard appeared to hint at what he'll find to do to pass his time in 2009 and beyond, apart from the obvious.

Asked about his plans for life after F1 (as a driver), the Scot said: "I will enjoy being in Melbourne, or wherever the first grand prix happens to be next year, but in a different capacity."

With the BBC taking over F1 coverage from ITV from next season, there has long been speculation that the Scotsman might move from the cockpit to the pundit's seat, and many will take yesterday's comment as unofficial confirmation that a deal has been done.

Other than the fact that Coulthard will have up-to-date experience of F1 cars, many appreciate the Scot's strictly non-PC approach to life, particularly in a sport where the corporate image of teams and sponsors has left us with a grid of yes men.

Coulthard was on good form yesterday, and may even have set a few alarm bells ringing at BBC HQ. When asked how he was passing his time in Singapore as the timing of the sessions has meant a total change of personal schedules, he replied: "Karen is here with me, so I am just using the extra time."

Furthermore, when asked if the fact that the race is taking place under floodlights and might hinder drivers' performances, he hit back: "I actually think the night aspect is more a marketing thing than it will be an influence on the racing. I don't think anyone will say after the race 'I could have won if I could have seen a wee bit better'.
