French GP: Friday Press Conference

NEWS STORY
20/06/2008

Sebastien, if I can start with you. Tell us about the progress you have made with the new car. You made the debut in Monaco and then we went to Canada, so finally you've had a test session. How has that manifested itself since then?
Sebastien Bourdais: It is obviously always difficult to judge what happens on a Friday as you don't really know what people are running in terms of fuel loads and stuff. I think the test was quite interesting for us in Barcelona. We come back to a track which pretty much uses the same aero configuration, so yes there was the opportunity to start with something and not a blank page, so that was quite nice. This morning I don't really know what happened. On my side we were extremely unhappy with the balance and this afternoon was better, but still not quite sure that we get the understanding of the car. We knew that it was going to be a learning process. We have good references with the TR2B and it is great to know exactly what was working for me but now basically we have to start all over again and we just hope we can get it done on time to have a good result here.

Has your team mate gone in a different direction? Can you take his settings? Are you fairly similar?
SB: Well, we had a different test programme this afternoon, so we will see what we can use from his side. But since we are in the press conference I cannot tell you much as I am not sure what they have done.

You are racing in front of your home crowd. You did Le Mans a couple of years ago, so it is not as if it has been a long time but what's it like to have the whole of the hopes of France on you?
SB: Well, it is always nice to have 200 or 300 people in front of the garage on a Thursday. It is always a boost and it is really nice to feel supported. But in the meantime it is a normal weekend and you need to treat it as such and give your best as usual. You can't really change your approach because it is your home grand prix, otherwise it means you are leaving something on the table everywhere else. That is not the case but it is always nice to be at home.

Timo, fourth place in Canada. Has that changed very much for you?
Timo Glock: It was nice at the end to get the first points, that is pretty clear. But at the end I didn't think it changed how I go into a weekend. It is maybe a bit easier but at the end it would be great to score in all races now a couple of points but that will be difficult. But Montreal was definitely a key weekend and quite positive for the team and for the people back in Cologne I think it was a good step.

When that happens is it a relief to have that result?
TG: It is a little bit. In the past couple of years in Montreal I have returned the best weekends and it is a good place for me and it happened this year again. When I crossed the start/finish line it was just a good feeling.

Looking back on the first half of the season can you see the progress that you have made?
TG: I think we have made a quite a lot of progress but at the end with the results you could not really see it. We were a bit unlucky in Bahrain with the problem with the clutch and in Turkey in qualifying with the broken front suspension and then in Monaco when I made a lot of mistakes. It was not really clear to see but I think at the end in Montreal everything came together and it worked out and I was quite happy with it.

Has that given you confidence now for the second half of the season or at least these next few races?
TG: Definitely. From race to race I just get more confident and I just know more about the car and just how it works. Today was a bit difficult but on top of that I think so far it was quite a good progress.

Nico, obviously there was the incident in Canada. Looking back on that how do you see it?
Nico Rosberg: It was just unfortunate really that I didn't expect the red light and that's it. It is a new situation and we have seen many people go through it because it is a new rule. In the pit stop there are a lot of things you have to do and I just I didn't think of that. When you don't expect something it takes a while to react to new situations.

Does the penalty change your approach to the weekend?
NR: Definitely, yeah, because more or less it is going to be very difficult to improve many qualifying positions as I get 10 positions and if I make it into Q3 I am more or less going to be last anyway. It does make the approach quite different. We need to think about trying to pass people, trying to not have so much understeer when I am running right behind people and to be able to pass into turn five. There are all these things you have to think about and also to compromise your qualifying for that.

Does it also change the strategy as well?
NR: Yeah, definitely. It is very different actually and people are just trying to think out of the box and see what you come up with.

I can imagine the last few races have been quite frustrating for you in terms of results?
NR: Yeah, definitely. We had a good start to the season and then it was a bit more difficult on these normal tracks like Turkey and Barcelona. But still we were picking up the points which was good. In the last two races the team gave me a very good car, it was pretty strong, and I was really happy and feeling comfortable. I was very happy with the pace in general but unfortunately difficult conditions in Monaco didn't go my way that weekend and then with Canada it meant two bad races. It is the way it goes and now I need to look forward.
