Timo Glock has claimed pole position at the Hungaroring with a scorching lap in the closing stages of today's qualifying session to put himself ahead of teammate Andi Zuber and title rival Lucas di Grassi.

The German stunned his rivals with a lap of 1:27.566 with a few minutes remaining in the session: Zuber crossed the line after his teammate just 0.190 seconds behind on the timesheets, but diGrassi's best lap was almost eight tenths off pole.

The session started in cooler conditions than this morning's free practice session, with clouds covering most of the circuit and bringing the temperature down a little from the extremes of earlier in the day.

The fastest time in the first half of the session was fought over between Glock, di Grassi, Kazuki Nakajima and Giorgio Pantano, with the latter looking more comfortable as the session went on after his strong performance earlier in the day. The Italian's time of 1:28.411 looked to have sewn up the top spot as most of the drivers returned for fresh rubber at the halfway stage, but there was more to come.

One man who wouldn't be showing anything more in the session was Karun Chandhok, who was running fourth quickest early in the session until he went too deep at turn eleven and found the wall. New driver Marco Martinez was also out of his car after his car stopped at the next turn: teammateJavi Villa also went off at the same corner, but managed to spin his car back around and rejoin the track.

With fresh tyres and the temperatures dropping further it was clear that there were going to be better times to come from the drivers, and they didn'tdisappoint : Glock claimed the fastest first and second sector times, Pantano then topped him, and di Grassi looked to have finally taken his first pole position with a lap of 1:28.349 until the iSport duo ruined his day, pulling out a couple of vintage laps to close out the front row.

Behind the top three a massively disappointed Pantano finished fourth, ahead of Pastor Maldonado, Adam Carroll (who claimed his fastest lap last time around), Luca Filippi, Kazuki Nakajima, Nicolas Lapierre and Andy Soucek.
