Before you say a word, our headline does not refer to team members passing on secret information to rival teams, but to plans to increase security at the Northamptonshire track following the recent terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow.

Ever since the two attacks at the weekend Britain has been at a 'critical' level of terror alert, which essentially means that an attack is expected.

Authorities are naturally concerned that any event or location which attracts large numbers of people could become a prime target for terrorists, who not only wish to hurt as many people as possible but also attract the most publicity.

Other than obvious increase in security at airports, train stations and major tourist landmarks, this has meant operating a no-fly zone over Wimbledon where the tennis finals are currently being held.

With the British Grand Prix being held this weekend, authorities are concerned at the sheer size of the crowd but by the fact that for a few brief hours the Northamptonshire track becomes one of the busiest 'airports' in the world as drivers, teams, sponsors and corporate guests fly in to and out of the circuit.

Although it is not anticipated that there will be a no fly zone, which would result in chaos for many of those whose only real choice is to fly in to the track, security on the ground will be increased.

"We are working closely with the Silverstone circuit management and will be doing all we can to keep race goers safe but minimise any disruption," said Supt Simon Blatchly of Northamptonshire Police yesterday. "Security is our utmost priority and while there is no intelligence to suggest a threat to the Grand Prix, we have seen that attacks can happen without warning."

Speaking on behalf of Silverstone, the circuit's managing director, Richard Phillips, said: "The security and enjoyment of both spectators and participants at the British Grand Prix is of paramount importance. "In addition to the police presence, Silverstone employs 2000 stewards and has installed additional CCTV to ensure the smooth operation of the event and the safety of all attending."
