Berger up for a fight

NEWS STORY
07/02/2007

In the wake of comments from Williams and Spyker that they will go to court in order to prevent Toro Rosso And Super Aguri entering customer cars, the Italian outfit's boss, Gerhard Berger (right), has said he is ready and eager to fight them.

"If they want to do so, fine, then we will fight it out," the Austrian told the official Formula One website (Formula1.com). "But again, we checked our situation very carefully, and we don't see the slightest hint that we are not fulfilling the wording of the regulations. We checked very carefully on the legal side, on the FIA side. We have checked very carefully the wording of the Concorde Agreement, and it shows very clearly to us that what we are doing is absolutely correct, that we are inside the regulations."

Making it quite clear that his team will - as suspected - run with the Red Bull RB3 fitted with a Ferrari engine, he added: "We went on a route that even if we wanted we could not go back. It is done."

Referring to the attitude of Williams and Spyker, the only teams to have threatened action, the former F1 racer said: "If somebody from the other teams has that impression, that's the nature of competition. But it is not up to them to judge whether what we are doing is right or wrong. I respect their comments, but in our view we are a hundred percent fine.

"It is basically Williams and Spyker who are worried and I know the reason for that," he added, "they fear our competitiveness."

In 2006, Toro Rosso was given special dispensation to run with V10 engines, even though the OK was originally given to cash-strapped Minardi, which was subsequently bought out by cash-rich Red Bull.
