Barrichello quickest on day 2 at Jerez

NEWS STORY
14/09/2006

Honda's Rubens Barrichello was the quickest of six drivers on duty at Jerez de la Frontera today, the second day of testing at the Spanish track.

Following overnight rain, the circuit remained damp this morning, which prevented any meaningful track activity until 11.00am.

Barrichello was running with the latest spec engine, the type the Japanese team hopes to homologate for 2007, but which suffered a failure at Monza last Friday.

James Rossiter, who finished fourth quickest, behind the two Renaults, was not running the latest spec engine, worked on set up and tyre evaluations, with an eye on the three remaining races. The English driver will run the new spec engine tomorrow, the final day of testing here.

Giancarlo Fisichella joined the test today, replacing Fernando Alonso, who banged his knee at Monza. The Italian worked on tyre testing, making selections for China, but his programme was compromised by a couple of engine failures. Giancarlo is understood to have been running the same spec engine that Alonso used at Monza, the spec which the French team is hoping to homologate for 2007.

With Heikki Kovalainen unwell, Jose Maria Lopez continued his programme and continued to focus on software development and set up changes. In spite of only covering a small number of laps, Lopez set the third-fastest lap time of the session. Kovalainen is expected to fit enough to drive again tomorrow.

"We must admit that this was a tough day for the team because of mechanical problems with the cars," said Christian Silk. "But the data we did manage to collect is interesting and will need to be completed tomorrow. The team did today a great job to optimize the running time as much as possible and that is a positive point."

Red Bull had Robert Doornbos and Tonio Liuzzi on duty, between them the two drivers completed 156 laps, with the Dutchman the quicker of the two.
