Win then party, Mansell tells Button

NEWS STORY

Former F1 and CART Champion, Nigel Mansell, has advised Jenson Button to put his party lifestyle behind him and concentrate on winning.

Talking to British tabloid, The Sun, at a go-kart event in London, where the Englishman revealed his role as an ambassador for Formula BMW, the 1992 World Champion said: "It is time Jenson realised he must concentrate on his job. He must forget about some of the other things he gets involved in."

Following his F1 debut in 2000, when the English youngster was the shock signing for the WilliamsF1 team, it's well documented that Button let the fame and fortune go to his head.

He then spent two largely unfulfilling seasons with Renault (Benetton), before being dropped in favour of Fernando Alonso, leading some to believe that 2000 was as good as it was ever going to get.

However, a move to BAR in 2003 clearly kick-started the Button revival, and it wasn't long before he was once again being tipped as a future winner.

Despite much negative publicity, following two major wrangles over contracts, there are many who still tip the 25-year-old as a potential champion, though there are many who claim that with no wins from one hundred races the chances are remote.

Although Button appears to be much more focussed these days, he does still make it into the newspapers for reasons other than his skill behind the wheel of an F1 car, and it is this that Mansell believes is preventing the Honda driver from achieving his potential.

"Jenson has the talent to win races and compete for the title, that's never been in doubt," he said. "Now he has this 100-race statistic around his neck and knows he has to prove himself. When you start winning Grands Prix - then it can be party time."

Looking ahead to next season, Mansell is in no doubt as to who his money will be on for the World Championship, and it isn't Button.

"Michael (Schumacher) is still the man to beat," he warned. "He'll want it more than ever."
