Sepang Preview: India

The Sepang International Circuit was built in 1999, and hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in the same year. It was designed by the renowned circuit guru Hermann Tilke, and was the first of the new breed of ultra-modern purpose built racing facilities anywhere in the world. The circuit is situated in the Southern corridor of Peninsular Malaysia bordering the Negeri Sembilan state, some 64 km south of the capital Kuala Lumpur. Sepang circuit is just five minutes away from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Its 5.542 km length has a very interesting configuration which should make for good action during the two races on Sunday during the Malaysian A1 Grand Prix of Nations. The circuit features two long straights connected by a tight hairpin, two shorter straights and a variety of tight and flowing corners. It is a very wide circuit with a minimum width of 18 m, becoming as wide as 25 m is some places. The circuit is covered by 27 closed circuit TV cameras via fibre optic cabling and includes on-line, real time tracking of the race cars, combined with electronic marshal posts which will flash coloured lights to the drivers instead of flags.

The architecture of the Sepang complex blends modern technology with Malaysian culture. In total, the track can accommodate some 130,000 spectators, with 30,000 in the unique double-fronted main grandstand whose roof resembles the leaves of a hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia. This was the first double frontage grandstand to be built at any racing circuit in the world. As the track has been built in a stadium-type location, with the track recessed in the valley, all spectators can see at least 50% of the circuit no matter where they sit.

The two-storey pit building is one of the largest in the world, housing all the main facilities. There are 30 pits, including 12 offices for the FIA and administration, plus race control, time keeping, media centre and interview room plus photographers' room. There is also a medical centre including an operating theatre to handle minor surgery.

A1 Team India had an extensive meeting on Wednesday evening at their hotel. During this meeting, many issues were discussed and the team is ready to attack the weekend with great enthusiasm and vigour. Four of the team mechanics have been substituted for this weekend only as the original four had a previous commitment to another racing team at the Macau Grand Prix. A complete de-brief of the last race in Australia was the first item on the meeting agenda. After that race weekend, the team had discovered a faulty component in the suspension system of the car, which had lost its elasticity, causing a great imbalance in the car when under loading in the corners. This had made the car impossible to drive, and just finishing the races in one piece was a great achievement for the team and its young driver. Operational routines were also discussed and the team has made much progress in this area, with allocation and responsibilities of tasks being very clearly defined to each member of the team.

A1 Team India's nominated driver for this weekend is Armaan Ebrahim. He has had very recent racing experience at the Sepang Circuit, having won his maiden Formula BMW Asia race here in May 2005, at the age of only fifteen, making him the youngest driver in motorsport to win an International Formula series race. His performances over the last two races in Portugal and Australia have also been very consistent, and A1 Team India is confident he will perform well at this track.

A1 Team India is also proud to announce that its Team Manager, Mr. Akbar Ebrahim has been invited to drive in the Proton Satria Celebrity race on Sunday alongside some of the great names in motorsport like two-time Formula One World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, 1980 Formula One Champion Alan Jones, ex-Formula One driver Jan Lammers, and Malaysian Rally legend Karamjit Singh. Other drivers in the field will include Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum al Maktoum, A1GP General Manager Stephen Watson (himself a former Formula 3000 driver), Aaron Lim (Formula BMW Asia driver) and Pippa Yoong (Alex Yoong's sister). The race will be in similarly prepared Proton Satria cars over 10 laps of the Sepang track on Sunday morning.
