There were 19 finishers out of 20 cars on Sunday, which is an excellent achievement, but not a record-breaking one!

There have twice been 22 finishers in Grands Prix - but with considerably more starters in the first place. For instance, when Indianapolis was a World Championship round, there were 22 finishers out of the usual 33 starters in the Indy 500 in 1950 and there were also 22 finishers out of 31 starters in the British Grand Prix in 1952.

Then there were 20 finishers out of the 33 starters in the Indy 500 that same year, 1952. There were also 20 finishers out of the 24 starters in the Canadian Grand Prix in 1976.

And 19 finishers is even more common. There were 19 finishers out of 33 starters in the Indy 500 in 1956, 19 out of 26 starters in the US GP East in 1977, a similar record in the Mexican GP of 1990, and in the Australian GP in 1991 (which only lasted 14 laps in the rain) and in the European Grand Prix in 1994.

But then there was only one retirement, that of Narain Karthikeyan. But there were no retirements at all out of the 15 starters in the 1961 Dutch Grand Prix, and only one out of the 10 starters in Argentina in 1958.

Now when we have no retirements at all in a Grand Prix, then we can start talking about records. But not for the moment.

Even so, Pitpass' congratulations to all Formula One teams for such phenomenal reliability. It does, however, just go to show that when the FIA lays down the law and says 'your engine has to last two races' you can do it!!
