Many people have been asking why, when they had no intention of taking part in Sunday's United States Grand Prix, the seven Michelin-shod teams bothered to line up on the grid and then complete the warm up lap, before retuning to the pits and 'retiring'.

According to a high-level source, by lining up on the grid and then completing the parade (warm-up) lap, the teams legally fulfilled their contractual obligation to the race promoter. This means that having completed that one lap, the teams cannot be sued by the race promoters.

The same source that confirmed this to Pitpass, clearly taking a leaf out of the Gordon Ramsey school of charm, added that by doing so, the teams "f***** the promoter, and f***** the fans".
