Jordan hit with tyre penalty

NEWS STORY

Jordan will be prohibited from running a third car during free practice in Montreal, following an infringement of the tyre regulations at the Nurburgring on Friday.

Following Friday's session, it was discovered that Franck Montagny, on loan from Renault, had used six sets of tyres, whereas the rules stipulate that only four sets are allowed.

The FIA's stewards fully appreciate that Montagny had not been aware of the facts, but since Jordan gained an advantage from the error the team has to be penalized.

Montagny's pace - particularly in the second session, astounded many F1 insiders, since the Frenchman out-paced Felipe Massa, Jacques Villeneuve and Tonio Liuzzi, not to mention his two Jordan teammates.

In a statement issued following the stewards' decision, Jordan's sporting director, Trevor Carlin, said, "This was an honest mistake by the team and we realise now it was against the current regulations.

"No unfair advantage was sought and we believe none has been gained. We apologise to the FIA for this error in judgement."
