Coulthard and Red Bull

NEWS STORY

Despite the fact that he has saved Jaguar Racing, and should therefore be roundly applauded, one cannot help but fear that Dietrich Mateschitz, despite his supposed desire to shun the spotlight, is more than happy to talk to journalist and share his views, whatever they might be, with the rest of the world.

Earlier this week, the Austrian claimed that David Coulthard had no chance of a drive with his team, then two days later appeared to say quite the opposite, claiming that the Scots veteran is under consideration.

In a written response to Reuters, Mateschitz said: "Among the experienced drivers with 'development know-how', David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld would be of interest," he said.

Although Mr Mateschitz says that both Coulthard and Klien are "of interest", neither is scheduled to drive the Red Bull car, as all efforts appear to be focussed on Christian Klien and F3000 champion, Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Despite claims in the German media last week that Klien has been given a contract with Red Bull for 2005, it appears that no such deal has been done, though Mateschitz is clearly support of his fellow-Austrian.

"It's no accident that people talk about the first year in Formula One as being a learning year," he said. "Afterwards a driver has to prove himself. From that point of view, Christian Klien should get his chance, but he has to prove himself in a series of tests, just like Vitantonio Liuzzi, who impressively won the Formula 3000 championship as a Red Bull junior driver."

Mateschitz went on to point out that Red Bull is approaching F1 with a completely different 'mind set' to the car manufacturers.

"Our focus is on the drivers, the sport, and the fun involved in the sport," he said. "Our approach to Formula One is completely different from that of a carmaker: it is more subtle and probably also more competitive.

"We are involved in Formula One for our drivers and for our rookie team," he continued. "And we are going to be successful at it because our most urgent priority is to establish a team standing that is in keeping with the Red Bull standards."
