Button: CRB finds in BAR's favour

NEWS STORY

After keeping the F1 world waiting for what seems like an eternity the Contract Recognition Board has finally adjudictaed over the Button affair and finds that it is BAR who have a valid contract for the Englishman's services for 2005.

Both Williams and BAR presented their case to the CRB in Milan last Saturday, but it was another four days before the verdict was finally delivered.

Williams had claimed they had a prior option on Button that they were able to exercise due to BAR not having a fully finalised deal for engines from Honda beyond the end of 2004 when the contract was drawn up over summer.

According to BAR, however, Honda's intentions were clear and this formed the basis of their counter argument against Williams.

Williams have confirmed that they will not seek to challenge the judgement. BMW WilliamsF1 Team Principal Frank Williams said, "Naturally we are disappointed with the CRB's conclusion. We took the view that Jenson was a driver worth challenging for, and based on strong legal advice, we have no regrets about making a bid for his services."

He went on to say, "The CRB accepted a significant number of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team’s arguments, but nevertheless found against us. We do not believe any further legal action in relation to this matter to be in the broader interests of the sport. In spite of the CRB’s conclusion, which relates to 2005, we will maintain our close relationship with Jenson for 2006."

Speaking after the annoucement Jenson Button was quoted as saying, "Naturally I am disappointed by the ruling, but as a matter of principle, I firmly believe in standing by the decision the CRB have reached today. BAR have been extremely professional at the race track during this process, and I expect this to continue. I look forward to joining the BMW WilliamsF1 Team in the future."

The BMW WilliamsF1 Team will make a further announcement concerning its 2005 driver line-up in due course.

BAR team boss, Dave Richards said, "I'm delighted to confirm that we just received the official notification that the CRB have ruled in our favour".

It now remains to be seen exactly where this leaves Jenson Button who had indicated quite clearly that he wanted to be in a Williams next season. Somehow we think that it is unlikely that this announcement spells the end of the twists and turns in this long running saga.
