Toyota and Jordan

NEWS STORY
30/07/2004

Since the German GP there have been increasing rumours, linking Jordan with Toyota, in terms of an engine deal.

Although the Irish outfit has a further year of its contract with Ford still to run, its believed that there are performance clauses in place that would allow for a 'parting of the ways'.

Certainly, Toyota seems up for it: "If the capability is there then we can do it," John Howett told Autosport magazine. "But with the engine regulations in such a state of flux at the moment we cannot say anything for definite just yet."

Over the years, Jordan has used, and been linked with, a number of different engine suppliers, indeed this time last year the Silverstone-based outfit was rumoured to be close to a deal with Mercedes-Benz.

Much depends on the on-going issue regarding the FIA's proposals for 2005 and beyond, with engine configurations being a core issue. Therefore it's unlikely that Toyota will make any sort of decision until the rules have been agreed.

Both parties would appear to benefit from such a partnership, with the Japanese outfit's Ryan Briscoe tipped as a potential driver for the Irish team.

The stories linking Dubai's Al-Maktoum family with a buy-out of the Silverstone team have gone quiet in recent weeks. Though as pitpass has previously reported, it appears that this was blown out of proportion in the first place.
