BAR's Jenson Button topped the timesheets on the final day of testing at Jerez de la Frontera.

The English youngster completed 106 laps outpacing teammate Anthony Davidson, who completed 91 laps, by 0.411s. A problem during the morning necessitated a quick engine change before Button continued with the long-run tyre programme in the afternoon. Davidson's role was to assess a further Michelin test, however due to the incredibly difficult track conditions, the team decided to concentrate on assessing an aerodynamic programme.

"We have had a very busy test in extremely hot track conditions," said test team manager, Andrew Alsworth. We have managed to complete the main test items in our programme and, although we encountered some minor reliability issues during the three days, the car has remained consistently fast. We are hoping to carry this pace over to the French Grand Prix in a week's time."

Marc Gene, who is widely tipped to replace Ralf Schumacher in next weekend's French GP, finished second fastest. The Spaniard completed 114 laps, and a number of trial pit stops. Teammate Antonio Pizzonia, only completed eleven laps, after experiencing technical problems.

"We've had a useful three days in Jerez this week with Marc and Antonio, aided by the clear weather conditions," said test team manager Tim Newton. "We've covered all the elements of our test brief, including set-up work and systems checks on the FW26 in preparation for Magny-Cours. Both drivers also covered extensive mileage testing various tyre compounds with Michelin."

Once again, McLaren had Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard on duty. Although the Woking outfit has yet to officially confirm that the MP4-19B will make its race debut in France, the car's performance this week, in extreme conditions, surely means that such an announcement is a mere formality. The Finn finished third quickest, 0.216s off the pace, while Coulthard was 0.646s off the pace. Between them, the two McLaren drivers completed 174 laps.

Propping up the timesheets once again were the Toyotas of Cristiano da Matta and Ryan Briscoe. The Brazilian completed the most laps (130), finishing 1.635s off the pace, 0.2s ahead of Briscoe.

"It's been an extremely hot week of testing, the track even reached 56 degrees at one point," said da Matta. "We don't find this kind of heat everywhere we go, but it's good to test in extreme conditions because they bring different problems and they give us a chance to learn things for the future - particularly on cooling, tyre wear and degradation.

"Our main objective here was a tyre test aimed primarily at next week's French Grand Prix. It can be difficult to judge tyres at such high temperatures, but we finished everything we had planned and we came up with a good solution."

Note: We previously stated that Anthony Davidson was quickest and that teammate Jenson Button was fourth quickest. This was based on the official information from Jerez circuit. It now appears that the people at Jerez mixed up the two drivers, therefore Button was quickest and Davidson fourth.
