Fisichella quickest as Zonta crashes

Giancarlo Fisichella set the fastest time at Monza on a day largely overshadowed by a massive crash involving Toyota's Ricardo Zonta.

The Brazilian crashed into the barriers at the exit of the Parabolica in the morning, writing off his car and bringing the Japanese outfit's programme to a premature end. Thankfully the popular driver walked away totally unscathed.

Later in the day, pace-setter Giancarlo Fisichella had his own 'moment', when his left-rear tyre burst on the main straight.

"Today we followed our programme and tested some new aerodynamic parts as well as brakes," said race engineer, Giampaolo Dall'Ara. "We have also done some Bridgestone tyre work.

"Unfortunately in the late afternoon Giancarlo's rear left tyre burst when he entered the start/finish lane. For safety reasons we decided to stop the test for today and will check the car thoroughly. However, we will be able to continue as scheduled tomorrow."

Second quickest, a mere 0.056s off the pace, was Ferrari's Luca Badoer, the Italian working on tyre and new component testing.

Third quickest was Ralf Schumacher, who brought WilliamsF1's Italian test to a close. "From the engine side, we've had a productive three days of testing at Monza during which we completed a race weekend simulation," said Mario Theissen. "The team also worked on some improvements to the traction control system and the start procedure."

"Over the past three days, work at Monza has focused on brake, tyre and aero testing, with Ralf testing various new components for the FW26 in preparation for the United States and Italian Grands Prix," added Sam Michael. "The low speed corners at Montreal precipitate heavy brake wear, hence the work going on at the Italian track.

Having dominated proceedings yesterday, BAR's Anthony Davidson could only manage fourth today, having completed only 22 laps.

David Coulthard posted the sixth fastest time of the day, the Scot completing 65 laps in the MP4-19.

Propping up the timesheets, was Ryan Briscoe in the second Toyota.
