New shock for F1

NEWS STORY
01/04/2004

At a time when F1 team bosses, and indeed FIA President Max Mosley, are expressing their fears over the new European Arrest Warrant (EAW), a court in Italy has annulled the result of a 2003 hearing into the death of Ayrton Senna, thus clearing the way for a new manslaughter trial. The reason given for the annulment is given as "material errors".

This comes ten years after the death of the Brazilian and at a time when European races are already under threat as a result of the EAW which means that team bosses, engineers, designers, indeed anyone thought responsible for a fatal accident can be arrested in any part of the EU and held in custody pending trial.

Today's news is sure to put the forthcoming San Marino, and indeed other European Grands Prix in jeopardy.

WilliamsF1 boss Frank Williams, together with the team's technical director Patrick Head and designer Adrian Newey were all acquitted of manslaughter in 1997, a verdict that was upheld on appeal in 1999.
